Music Business Intensive: Building a Career as an Independent Artist
Taught by LJMA alumna Johanna James (Berklee College of Music), this course equips students with the tools, knowledge, and strategies needed to succeed as a working independent artist in today’s music industry. Through a strategic step-by-step process, from defining your vision to executing professional concepts, students will learn how to manage, market, and sustain a career while upholding their unique artistic identity.
We’ll explore the many moving parts of the modern music business, including traditional and digital marketing, networking, industry communication, copyright law, publishing, licensing, and the business of songwriting. Students will gain both a big-picture perspective and practical skills to navigate their careers creatively and strategically.
Each student will create their own independent artist project, applying class concepts to develop a personalized roadmap for success. Every session includes an interactive lesson and a hands-on activity to put ideas into practice immediately.
